Well Would You Look At That...
August 22nd, 2012
This skin was featured on the FUCK YEAH, TF2 Tumblr (Credit goes to me for submitting the post to FUCK YEAH, TF2. I know, I'm awesome.)
About This Skin
This is the first new skin I've created in many months. The reason for the lack of submissions as of late is due to work. I work full time, so I've not been very active lately. However, when Mann vs Machine was released, something caught my eye, and got me hyped up about making a new submission for GameBanana.
The thing that caught my eye was the
Bear Trap
in the Mann vs Machine Upgrade Shop. The Upgrade Shop area in the MvM maps consists of two props; one prop is the actual construction of the shop. The other prop is a whole bunch of weapon models and such, all combined into one big prop. Upon examining the texture file for the Upgrade Shop's weapon models, I noticed the Bear Trap texture.
As most of you will know, the Bear Trap is a scrapped weapon from the early stages of development, of Team Fortress 2. For the longest time, there has been no known existing copies of the texture file for the Bear Trap's model. Well finally, Valve includes the texture file for it. The only problem is, the texture file, when ripped from the gigantic Upgrade Shop "tools" prop's texture file, is a measly 256x256, and very low quality.
Despite that, I still managed to make a BLU skin for the Bear Trap, involving recoloring the paint swatch on the trigger to be BLU-colored, and you'll also notice that the metal areas of the Bear Trap has a slight blue tinge to it. I also created VMT files for the Bear Trap from scratch, just to add a bit of phong and such to it.
Yes, I know, another user here on GameBanana already uploaded the RED skin, and his own BLU skin. If you'll look at that submission, you'll see that I've already commented on that submission and informed the uploader of the submission that I was going to upload my own version. While the RED skin is probably very similar to his
(because we both ripped the Bear Trap texture from the bigger texture, duh)
, the BLU skin is completely different from his, and my VMT files are hand-coded. So please don't be leaving any comments about how this skin has already been uploaded.
So I've uploaded my skins here to GameBanana for anyone interested in them. You can use them as props in mapmaking, with Hammer, by extracting the models and materials into your "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\yourusername\sourcesdk content\tf" directory. You can also use these in Source Filmmaker by extracting them to the "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\SourceFilmmaker\game\tf" directory.
Installation Instructions
Installation instructions are available in the .RAR file, as "README.TXT". I also took the time to create a fancy .RAR file "Comment" area with the installation instructions which can be viewed if you're using WinRAR! How fancy!
