Some panels cause different events such as transwarp drive (from VOY: "Dark Frontier"), alien ship and shuttlecraft flybys, and even the medical chamber in the back room opens up. To top it all off, when in orbit of a planet, you can beam down to an alien compound complete with unlockable doors, sniper towers and a hut in the middle from which you can climb to a secret underground storage area.
