NFS: High Stakes Add-On Car
===========================
Ferrari 365 GTB/4 "Daytona"
===========================
by Nate Patrin

1st in a series of 'Grand Touring Classics'
Released 10.20.99

This is my second ever NFS: High Stakes car (my first being the 1970 AMC Javelin which I created in conjunction with Toni Nappi). I also consider it the first in what I hope to be a long series of 'Grand Touring Classics'- my favorite sports and racing cars made during the postwar era up until 1975.

INSTALLING:
Create a new folder in your Data/Cars directory. Call this new folder 'dayt'. Unzip the car.viv into this directory. If you want to use the vidwall, extract dayt.qfs into the Vidwalls folder. Then start up the game, select 'Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona' and smoke some Pirellis!

ABOUT THE CAR:
The last front-engine Ferrari (at least, according to my reference materials), the GTB/4 Daytona was unveiled in 1968 and made an immediate impact. A stylistic departure from the familiar rounded, swooping lines that graced predecessors like the 250 GT SWB and 275 GTB/4, the Daytona featured a basic, minimalist profile with no extra curves or flares tacked on. There was nothing understated about its performance, however- it could reach a top speed of 174 miles an hour (tuned on Le Mans racers to reach as high as 190) and could reach 50 by the time it would take to recite its name in full. Set this up against a Lamborghini Miura, De Tomaso Mangusta, Maserati Ghibli, Porsche 904, Iso Grifo and Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale* and you've got one hell of a late '60s European sports car showdown that the Daytona is unlikely to lose.

*Hint, hint. (Yes, I have a Ghibli and a Grifo in the works right now...)

ABOUT THE MODEL:
This one was based completely on EA's Ferrari Maranello. The only visible flaw on the car.fce is the Maranello hood scoop, which I have tried my best to "file down" but does sort of split the hood open just a bit in the damage model. The pop-up lights are also not a hundred percent perfectly lined up with the .tga, but eh. The whole shebang took me about seven hours (split up over a couple days), not including the time it took for me to figure out that making it out of the Modena would just not work. The dash was surprisingly quick to complete- thank whatever deity applies that the Lister Storm has a steering wheel that matches the Daytona's- and lots of other models' as well. Just did a fiddling with the textures, and voila. Of course, compared to the exterior the dash is pretty scrubby, but it's better than nothing and is still reasonably accurate, detail-wise. My biggest regret is that I couldn't find a way to give it the black trim that borders the rearmost end of the side windows.
All performance specifications are taken from the 1969 reference book "World Car Catalog".

AND COMING UP NEXT:
My upcoming 2nd car in the series is the perfect ride for anyone who wants to disrupt the wedding of the girl whose mother is having an affair with you. Uhm... okay, maybe you don't have to be Dustin Hoffman, but he did drive a spiffy car in 'The Graduate'- an Alfa-Romeo 1300 Junior Spider. Look for it soon!

WELL, ENOUGH OF THIS WORDINESS:
