Much has changed since 1920 so it would be more fair to say that The Cabinet is loosely based on the old German movie.
The movie is an intertwining of different genres such as film noir, horror and expressionist no-talk movie. It\'s a modern remake of the German masterpiece Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari from 1920.
