The Vanguard ships are capable varied and long range missions due to a twin warp nacelle configuration as well as the addition of a shuttle bay and expanded cargo holds. Defense and firepower have also been improved with the latest phaser emitters and photon torpedo launchers as well as improved capacity shield generators. In addition to the traditional Reconnaissance and Astrogation missions, these improvements give the Vanguard class multi-role capabilities such as Pathfinder missions by deploying navigational aids via the shuttle bay to guide starships to un-charted space sectors and the added firepower makes her suited for Security Escort missions. The upgraded sensor pallet includes a Minefield Detection System and a Multispectral Target Acquisition Sensor to operate as an element of an integrated sector sensor network.
