Beginning in July 1944, the Americans are stalling in the Normandy countryside. On the left wing of the front before they reach the Vire.

On July 6, Airel is released the next day, July 7, the American artillery began shelling the western bank of the Vire.
It prepares the ground for the 30th Infantry Division of General Hobbs, who must cross the Vire and secure the village of Saint-Fromond getting rid of Panzer Lehr division still exists.
