The beach When on June 6th 1944 the first US wave landed on Omaha Beach at 6.30 a.m.,one major objective already had gone wrong.The massive naval gun fire had missed it\'s targets.The huge bunker fortifications on a lengh of 7000 yards,some on a height of 170 feet,weren\'t hardly damaged.The beach and water obstackles were still intact.The 1st and 29th division together with the rangers got nailed to the beach by heavy machine gun fire,mortars and howitzers of the 352.infantry division.It was formed 1943 out of the dissolved 321st division,who had served on the eastern front.So around a 3rd of the soldiers had intensive combat experience.The new recruits to build up the new division were between 19 and 20 years old and showed,as some reports say signs of malnutrion due to food shortage in Germany. When the division started to buy additional milkproducts,the physical condition of the recruits improved.The training got difficult due to ammo and fuel shortage .It is said that most of the recruits fired their weapons only three times live until D-day.Another problem was the high amount of time the soldiers had to spend with building the Atlantic wall,with some times only three hours a day left for military training. WHen US destroyers came as close as possible to the bloody Omaha beach and started firing at the German positions,eventually and with great individual bravery the US troops broke through the lines driving the German defenders inland.
