The allies ( who blew some bridges also to stop Germans retreating ) chanced upon Remegan its bridge standing and little resistance, this was a chance to cross the Rhine in numbers and form a bridgehead for a push into the heart of Hitlers industrial centre.
Remagen was a very important, if not crucial battle which took place because of a hitch in blowing a bridge. Hitler had an effective plan to blow any bridges that were overrun or undefendable.
